The Machine

"I wish I could just shut this machine down."

"Well, why can't you? Isn't there like an on/off button somewhere?"

"No, there's not. The only way to stop it is to pull the plug."

"Then why don't you do that? Is it dangerous if it keeps raging on like it does?"

"Not dangerous. It just makes me incredibly sad."

"I really don't understand why you don't just pull the plug then..."

"I know it's going to stop eventually. Like, I get used to its noise and all that and then some day it just sorta stops."

"Yeah, but why would you put you through the noise and sadness in the first place? Aren't you tired of it? You said you tried it before, yeah?"

"Yeah, I have. It's true. I guess... I guess it's because I know sometimes the silence on the other side of it is as sweet as the one I'm experiencing now."
