"Your feet are not roots," Marianne's grandmother always said "that's why people move around." Marianne never really agreed with this. From a young age she never really moved around too much. Once she learned how to walk she preferred to simply stand around. She was excused from P.E., because she would stumble over her own feet, not being used to the speed at all. When she was a teenager, she started getting this prickly feeling in her toes. Sometimes it was even painful. No matter how much she washed her feet they would stay dirty. Doctors didn't know why and Marianne simply stopped going barefoot or walking in sandals anywhere when she was 14 because she was tired of people asking about her feet. Life went on, always walking slowly Marianne grew up and got a job at an office. It suited her perfectly because now she could sit around instead of stand around a lot as she used to. Then one day as Marianne was walking home from work she crossed the park. An excruciating pain went through her feet and she fell to the ground. Her feet were throbbing and she couldn't help but cry. She kicked her shoes off and saw her toes twisting and turning. They started turning brown. Marianne's head was spinning. What the hell was happening? She screamed for help and two people ran to her. One of them frantically called an ambulance and the other one passed out as her left big toe turned into a root and dug its way into the ground. The other toes followed one by one. Her heels wobbled painfully and turned into two big roots which branched out in tinier roots. Something in Marianne's mind told her to stand up. So she pushed herself up. The ambulance arrived but the rescuers had never seen anything like this and were dumbfounded. The pain had gone from Marianne's feet which were now buried in the ground. She wiped the tears off her cheeks and smiled at the blue sky above her. Everything suddenly made sense. She was always meant to cross this park. Her feet were always going to turn into roots. She had been practising standing around her entire life and finally she was blessed with the opportunity to do so. As the years went by Marianne became a popular tourist attraction, but after a few decades the interest dwindled and Marianne's legs turned into trunks with the most beautiful bark on it. Eventually Marianne herself became a tree and she stood around in the park happily ever after.
