Diving Into Creativity

I love that feeling of being in the element you're supposed to be in. It takes a bit for me to dive into it, but after a while it's like what surfers do, that they dive under the wave to not crash against it. They know the ocean rules everything, they just succumb to those rules. They get to know the ocean and the way it behaves that particular day. I feel the same way about creativity. It takes a bit of time and sometimes I really have to talk myself into putting on the wetsuit and tell myself to just go for it as I stand there with my board/pen in my hand looking at the ocean. It's even better when you find people who understand you. Your tribe. People who take what you do seriously. People who respect what you do even though you didn't write Harry Potter or The Catcher in the Rye. They take your characters seriously and compliment and critique where it's necessary. And suddenly it just feels right, like you're right where you're supposed to be. You were meant to create. Although it isn't tangible stuff (besides being able to print it out and read it) - you're creating. It's what you were meant to do this whole time. You're in the water and you're catching wave after wave and the wetsuit doesn't bother you anymore. The pen is your friend. It's not always like this, some days it's not an ocean you can tame. Most days it's people saying you can't do it, shouldn't do it or that you won't succeed, piled up on each other so tightly they form a rock and all you're equipped with is a little axe you can use to chip away at the mountain. But on days like these, you remember why you never stopped trying. You remember why you look up to the authors you look up to. Because they never gave up. Because they never stopped trying either. Going down this wobbly road or falling off that board more times than you can count is somehow worth it, because when you once in a while get to ride that wave of creativity, you're not ever going to forget it.
