She never knew what to do with that extra latte they always gave her. They always assumed it was for Michael and she just couldn't bring herself to tell them that he had dumped her the month before. So she kept paying for an extra latte and in a way it soothed her to live a lie every morning pretending he hadn't run off with her cousin. She didn't feel angry, just apathy. Of course she had been angry when she first found out but the rage soon turned to a feeling of numbness. It felt like she had been in a haze since it had happened. She had a more difficult time concentrating on meetings at work and she didn't notice things as she usually did when she walked her dog. She hadn't even deleted them on Facebook yet. Everbody was saying how strong she seemed when they had no idea how she had crumbled the first days. She could feel herself spiralling every night and her latest obsession was looking at the vanlife hashtag on instagram thinking about how it would be to just grab her dog, buy a van and leave it all. She could become an influencer and show them all. But she never had the courage to do it. Until one day. She was scrolling through Facebook when she saw that Michael and her cousin had gotten engaged. Her heart dropped and she ran to the bathroom because she couldn't fight the tears swelling up in her eyes. That night she went online and looked for vans. Her parents could help her rent out her flat while she was gone and everybody at work had been aniticipating a break-down for more than a month now. She found a decent van with a small bed and room enough for her dog to chill out in the back while she could drive. She met up with the owner the next day. On her way there she went to her local coffee shop to get the lattes, but when they handed her both she refused one of them and explained what had happened. "Oh, honey. We know and we're terribly sorry, we just didn't want to upset you." the barista who owned the coffee shop said with pity in her voice. God, she hated being pitied. The rage being thought of as a fool fueled her walk to the meeting with the van owner. She walked so fast and listened to the angriest music she could find on her phone that didn't torture her ears too much. In her rage she forgot to look where she walked when she crossed a street and she plunged straight into a pothole. She felt an instant sharp pain and screamed out. A bypasser ran to her and called 911. She was quickly brought to the hospital where they took x-rays and informed her that she had broken her leg in three places. Van life had to wait and she cried when she remembered she had just cancelled her Netflix subscription in an attempt to live a more zen and present life.
