It was just another Tuesday the day they arrived. A sunny day though, which was starting to become increasingly rare since September came around. Linda walked up to me and shook my hand and apologised for being late. I instantly noticed she had kind eyes. I assured her it didn't matter one bit and as we waited for her husband we complimented the weather. Not much later her husband, tall Robert// "Call me Bob" Robert walked up to us at the little horse rental shed. They were Americans from Washington. They were in great shape and excited to try the extra gaits the Icelandic horse has. They were experienced western riders but listened closely when my colleague and I told them how to ride Icelandic horses. Since they were American I assumed they were good at holding a conversation and since I was going on a 3 hour tour with them I was happy that this was indeed the case. They had an energetic and heartwarming vibe to them. We got on the horses and soon started chatting about everything between heaven and earth. They couldn't stop riding western style, but they had great control over their horses. Linda, I learned, was in her 60s and had been a travel writer and journalist. Bob, was in his 70s and worked with making prosthetics. The couple had met in Guam some 40 odd years ago where they had lived for 7 years and had had their first child. "You can't meet a good Christian girl at a bar." Bob told me his mother had told him when he told his mother, that he'd met Linda at bar on a night out. Linda and I laughed at Bob's story and we talked about how times had changed. The couple had traveled absolutely everywhere together. They showed genuine interest in my life as I showed interest in theirs. I was curious how they had lived their lives and I was fascinated by their subtle intimacy. Bob always had his eyes on Linda, checking if she was okay. I'm not sure if she noticed this or if she was used to it. He didn't do it in an overprotective or dominating way. He just wanted her to have the best experience possible. It wasn't long before I felt comfortable letting them try the Icelandic horse's extra gears and I started pacing and eventually galloping with these two people who were the same age as my grandparents would have been. Bob was smiling and laughing the entire time and Linda asked me about the gaits tölt and pace as her horse competed with mine. We reached a pen where we took the saddles and bridles off the horses and let them have a little break as we walked down to the waterfall. At the waterfall I told them all the fun stories I knew related to waterfalls. I basically told them everything I knew about Iceland on that trip. I was eager to teach them everything I could and the conversation flowed easily. They went off and explored around the waterfall themselves. Bob climbed down to the salmon ladders and balanced across them to get to a little artificial island right next to the waterfall. They were definitely travelers, trying to take in the experience as much as possible. Linda stood at the top and watched her husband climb around while she took photos. He climbed back up and they hugged and took in the views with their arms around each other. I felt like my heart exploded on their behalf. They came back to me and we wandered up to the horses. I hated that I only had these people in my presence for only another 1,5 hour. I could've spent an entire evening talking to them about politics, travels and life in general. I was amazed at how well they handled their horses who were getting quite eager to run home. All in all I was amazed by them. When we came back and the horses were back in the pen, Linda climbed up the pen to take a photo of the horses from above and Bob went over to her calmly and stood next to her and leaned a bit against her to support her. We thanked each other for a great tour and I was sad to see them go. Their whole aura was so mesmerizing. And I'm pretty sure I heard them laugh just around the corner from the rental where they had parked their car just after we had said goodbye when I exclaimed to my colleague: "I'm in love with them!"
