Behind The Door

When they moved in they were told never to open the door. As kids they made up dramatic stories as to why the door was not to be opened. Some days it was because a troll lived in the room or whatever was behind it. Other days there was a great treasure in there and possibly a dragon guarding it. Some days there would be mountains of candy in there and the temptation to open the door would be almost too great to resist. The previous owners had been told the same thing when they moved in and nobody knew when the door had been opened last. Maybe it was locked. Maybe it wasn't. There was a seriousness in people's eyes and a fear in their voice when they passed on the message that one simply wouldn't dare to even touch the handle. When they grew to become teenagers they started questioning why their parents would even buy a house with a door that one shouldn't open. There could be dead bodies in there, weapons or maybe something so horrible they couldn't imagine it. The children moved out when they had to leave for college. The brothers tried to convince their parents to move out, but the parents argued they had nowhere else to go. The children were afraid of leaving their parents in a house like that. But the parents wouldn't budge. They said they were too emotionally attached to the house; it was where they had raised their children and a mysterious door wasn't going to change how they felt about the rest of the house. The children, who had become young adults, later had children of their own who came to the house and played and made up stories about what was behind the door. When the parents died the children put the house up for sale. The young couple who moved in with their daughter sensed the fear in the childrens' voices when they spoke of the door and told their daughter never to touch the door. A few years later as they were listening to music and having breakfast together on a slow Sunday morning, they heard a knock. The woman went to the front door but nobody was outside. The hairs on her back of her neck stood up when she heard the knock again. It came from the other side of the door.
